HOW IT ALL BEGAN , The Story...

During thepost-classical era, Islamic medicine was the most advanced in the world, integrating concepts ofancient Greek,Roman,MesopotamianandPersian medicineas well as the ancient Indian tradition ofAyurveda, while making numerous advances and innovations. Islamic medicine, along with knowledge ofclassicalmedicine, was later adopted in themedieval medicine of Western Europe, after European physicians became familiar with Islamic medical authors during theRenaissance of the 12th century.

Medieval Islamic physicians largely retained their authority until the rise ofmedicineas a part of thenatural sciences, beginning with theAge of Enlightenment, nearly six hundred years after their textbooks were opened by many people. Aspects of their writings remain of interest to physicians even today.

Unani medicine is largely based on principles proposed by such physicians as Hippocrates and Galen. In addition, several Arab and Persian scholars (including the Arab philosopher and physicist Avicenna) have contributed to the development of Unani medicine. Unani medicine, also called Unani tibb, Arabian medicine, or Islamic medicine, a traditional system of healing and health maintenance observed in South Asia.

With additional contributions of medical wisdom from other parts of the Middle East and South Asia, Unani medicine came to be known also as Arabian, or Islamic, medicine. The word “Unani” means “Greek” in Arabic.

Understanding UNANI...

Unani medicine is a system of alternative medicine involving the use of herbal remedies, dietary practices, and alternative therapies, Unani medicine addresses the prevention and treatment of disease.

According to practitioners of Unani medicine, achieving a balance of the bodily fluids known as “the four humors” (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile) is essential to health.

The Four Humors are responsible for the nutrition, growth and metabolism of the organism.

A key principle of Unani medicine is that disease results from an imbalance in air, earth, water, and fire, four elements thought to comprise all that exists in nature, including the human body.

The Four Humors are the metabolic agents of the Four Elements in the human body.  The right balance and purity of them is essential to maintaining health.

When the Humors are harmonious, balanced and working well together, that is a condition called Eucrasia, or “good mixture”.  When the Humors are unbalanced, aggravated, or out of sorts, that is a condition called Dyscrasia, or “bad mixture”.

Unani medicine is partly based on the principle that environmental conditions, including the quality of water and air,) can significantly impact health.

In Unani medicine, conditions are often treated with herbal formulas containing a variety of natural substances. For example, a formula known as Khamira Abresham Hakim Arshad Wala contains such botanicals as saffron, cardamom, Indian bay leaf, and citron. Considered a tonic, Khamira Abresham Hakim Arshad Wala is said to enhance heart health and aid in the treatment of cardiovascular problems likehigh blood pressure andangina. Commonly prescribed treatments in Unani medicine also include dietary changes, leech therapy, and surgery.

In the Unani system of medicine, tabiyatis an individual’s internal power or capacity to withstand or combat disease and to perform normal physiological functions. Believing that it is onlytabiyatthat is engaged in curing a disease,

Unani hakims hold that they only assist from “outside” by prescribing therapeutic relief. If not adversely affected, tabiyatcaneradicatemost infections without medicaltreatment, using what may be thought of as the natural defence system of the mind and body.

The six physical factors in UNANI Medicine...

Unani medicine recognises six physical or external factors called asbab-e-sittah-zarooriah, which are essential in establishing a synchronized biological rhythm and thus living a balanced existence. The six asbab-e-sittah-zarooriah are:

Hawa (air)

Hawa (air), in which the quality of the air a person breathes is thought to have a direct effect on his or her temperament and, thus, health.

Makool-womashroob (food and drink)

Makool-wo-mashroob (food and drink), in which the nutritional value and the quality and quantity of one’s food and drink are believed to ensure physical fitness by strengthening tabiyat.

Ihtebas and istifragh (retention and excretion)

Ihtebas and istifragh (retention and excretion), which considers the metabolism of food and liquid as both affecting and being regulated by tabiyat. According to Unani medicine, the assimilation of food and liquid facilitates the elimination from the body of excessive and noxious substances. Therefore, to maintain a harmonic and synchronized tabiyat, certain beneficial end-products of kaun-o-fasad(genesis and lysis) are retained in the body while harmful ones are expelled.

iHarkat-o-sakoon nafsaniah (mental work and rest),

iHarkat-o-sakoon nafsaniah (mental work and rest), which emphasizes the simultaneous engagement of the human mind in numerous emotional and intellectual activities. Just as the body needs systematic and planned exercise and rest, Unani medicine holds that the human mind and brain need adequate stimulation and proper relaxation as well.

Naum-o-yaqzah (sleep and wakefulness),

Naum-o-yaqzah (sleep and wakefulness), in which an individual’s health and alertness are understood as being dependent on a specific amount of sound sleep in the course of a 24-hour (circadian) cycle.

Harkat-wo-sakoon-e-jismiah (bodily exercise and repose)

Harkat-wo-sakoon-e-jismiah (bodily exercise and repose), which emphasizes the positive effects of balanced physical exercise on an individual’s internal resistance and tabiyat

Nature Provides Everything to Heal Yourself

Unani medications are often processed by classical methods of preparation as originally described in Greco-Arabic medicine. Unani medicines are used singly or are compounded with other substances to achieve synergistic, antagonistic, or detoxifying effects or simply as bases for effective ingestion and assimilation.

Unani, like Ayurveda, is based on theory of the presence of the elements in the human body. According to followers of Unani medicine, these elements are present in fluids and their balance leads to health and their imbalance leads to illness.
